The Power of Wise Counsel and Patience - Faith Moves

Scripture

Proverbs 12:15-16 (ESV):

“ The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice. The vexation of a fool is known at once, but the prudent ignores an insult.”

Reflection

In Proverbs 12:15-16, we find a stark contrast between the fool and wise, highlighting their approaches to wisdom and anger. The fool is self-assured, convinced that his way is the best, refusing to listen to the counsel of others. In contrast, the wise man is open to advice, acknowledging that wisdom often comes from sources outside of oneself.

Furthermore, the fool is quick to anger, revealing his vexation for all to see. This impulsive reaction often leads to regret and further conflict. On the other hand, the prudent person, exercising self-control, chooses to overlook insults, understanding that reacting in anger only fuels discord.

These verses challenge us to examine how we respond to both advice and provocation. Are we quick to defend our position, or do we seek the wisdom that comes from counsel? Do we let anger control our responses, or do we, with prudence, overlook the offenses that come our way?

Spiritual Formation and Soul Care

Morning Exercise: Seeking Wise Counsel

As you start your day, take a moment to reflect on the areas of your life where you might be leaning on your own understanding. Is there something you’re struggling with or a decision you’re facing? Reach out to a trusted friend, mentor, or spiritual leader and seek their advice. Opening yourself up to wise counsel can be the key to unlocking new perspectives and solutions.

Afternoon Exercise: Practicing Patience

During the day, be mindful of situations that might provoke you. Whether it’s a challenging interaction at work or a frustrating situation at home, choose to pause before reacting. Practice patience and ask yourself, “Is this worth my emotional energy? How can I respond in a way that reflects wisdom rather than folly?” By doing so, you embody the prudence that Proverbs encourages.

Evening Exercise: Reflecting on the Day

Before you end your day, spend time in prayer and reflection. Ask yourself:

  • Did I seek wise counsel today?

  • How did I handle situations that could have provoked anger?

  • Where can I grow in my response to advice and provocation?

Use this time to ask God for continued wisdom and the strength to embody the characteristics of the prudent.

Pastoral Life Coaching Tip

When you feel the urge to react quickly—especially in anger—take a moment to breathe deeply and pray. This simple pause can shift your perspective, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide your response rather than your emotions. Consider adopting a breath prayer, such as “Lord, give me wisdom,” to center yourself in moments of tension.

Bonus Challenge

Identify a situation from your past where you acted in haste and it led to conflict. Reflect on how you could have handled it differently with the wisdom and patience Proverbs 12:15-16 encourages. Share this reflection with a friend or in your journal, and commit to applying this wisdom in the future.

Closing Prayer

Lord, grant me the humility to seek wise counsel and the prudence to overlook insults. May Your Spirit guide my thoughts and actions, shaping me into a person who reflects Your wisdom and grace in every situation. Help me to embrace the wisdom You offer, even when it challenges my own understanding, and to respond with patience and love when provoked. Amen.
