Living Out Holiness -Faith Moves
Scripture Reading
1 Peter 1:14-16 (NIV)
“As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy’”
Reflection
Peter calls us to profound transformation in our everyday lives. As believers, we’re urged to move beyond our old patterns and embrace a life marked by holiness. This isn’t merely avoiding sin; it’s about aligning our entire way of living with God’s purity and purpose. Holiness involves a radical reorientation of our desires and actions to reflect the character of the One who calls us.
In this passage, Peter contrasts our previous ignorance with the new understanding we have in Christ. We are no longer bound by our past selves; instead, we are invited into a higher way of living. Holiness is not an option but a divine mandate that influences every aspect of our lives.
Engaging the Tension
In a world that often values convenience and personal pleasure over moral integrity, embracing holiness can feel countercultural. Societal expectations frequently promote a lifestyle that contrasts sharply with the standards set by God. For example, materialism and self-indulgence are celebrated, while self-control and purity are often undervalued. This creates a tension between living according to God’s call and conforming to the prevailing cultural norms.
As we engage with this tension, recognize that living out God’s holiness may require making choices that are unpopular or misunderstood by others. It involves, standing firm in our values even when they clash with societal trends. By embracing the divine call to holiness, we not only align with God’s standards but also offer a counter-narrative to the world’s often misguided norms.
