Embrace God’s New Work: Trusting His Path in the Wilderness

Scripture

Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” — Isaiah 43:18-19 (NIV)

Reflection

In the hustle and bustle of life, it’s easy to get caught up in the past—reflecting on what could have been or lingering on mistakes and regrets. Yet, in Isaiah 43:18-19, God calls us to let go of what lies behind and open our eyes to the new work He is doing in our midst. This isn’t about ignoring our past experiences but rather about seeing them through the lens of God’s ongoing redemption and creativity. He is making a way in the wilderness of our lives, carving out streams in places we thought were dry and barren.

God's new work often begins where we feel the most lost, the most disconnected. It is in these moments of uncertainty that His guidance becomes our light. As we embrace this new work, we are invited to release old patterns, thoughts, and habits that no longer serve our growth in Christ. The challenge is not simply to perceive the new thing but to actively engage with it, trusting that God’s way, even if it leads us through uncharted territory, is the best path forward.

Isaiah 43:18-19 speaks to a profound spiritual truth that resonates with our journey of faith: God is always at work, creating and renewing. The instruction to "forget the former things" and "not dwell on the past" challenges us to release our grip on past failures, disappointments, or even victories. The focus is shifted to the present moment, where God is actively working, inviting us to perceive the new things He is bringing forth. This passage encourages us to trust in God's ability to make a way even in the most desolate and challenging circumstances of our lives.

Spiritual Formation and Soul Care

Morning Exercise: Begin your day with a moment of reflection. Ask God to reveal the "new thing" He is doing in your life. Spend a few moments in silent prayer, opening your heart to perceive His work in areas where you feel stagnant or stuck.

Afternoon Exercise: Take a walk or spend time in nature. As you walk, consider the natural pathways and streams that have formed over time. Reflect on how God is forming new pathways in your life. As you walk, pray for the courage to follow where He leads, even when the way seems uncertain.

Evening Exercise: Journal about a specific area of your life where you have felt "in the wilderness." Reflect on how God might be creating a "way" or a "stream" in that area. End your journaling with a prayer of surrender, asking God to help you let go of the past and embrace the new work He is doing.

Pastoral Life Coaching Tips

  • Engage the Tension: Embrace the tension between the familiar past and the unknown future. Allow this tension to draw you closer to God as you rely on His wisdom and guidance.

  • Bonus Challenge: Identify one past experience that has been holding you back. Pray about it, asking God to help you release it, and take one practical step toward embracing the new path God is showing you.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your promise to do a new thing in our lives. Help us to perceive Your work in our midst, especially in the wilderness places where we feel lost or unsure. Grant us the grace to release the past and the faith to walk confidently into the future You have prepared for us. May we trust in Your guidance and embrace the new streams of life You are creating in our hearts. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
